Happy Days and Forward Pays
On Wednesday mornings my daughter and I go for breakfast together....before we head off to school (for her) and work (for me). It used to be a Tuesday morning ritual, until something wonderful changed that for us.
A few months ago I could not make our usual Tuesday morning breakfast and had to reschedule with my girl for the following morning - Wednesday.
We walked into the breakfast place that Wednesday morning, and ordered our usual breakfast. Muffin and tea for me and full breakfast for my 'could eat ya out of house & home' girl.
Standing behind us in the line-up was an older gentleman. I had noticed him standing there but thought nothing of it.
Just as our order was being rang through, the older gentleman moved forward with a $20 and said to us, "breakfast is on me". My mouth dropped open as I looked as this man...totally protesting.."No sir that's ok..REALLY"...but the cashier took his money and just smiled. He took his change and his coffee (the workers had already poured for him) and he went to take a seat.
Feeling a little odd by the whole thing and trying to silence the STRANGER alert that was ringing in my head...the girl behind the counter said..."it's ok...that's just Jake, he does this every Wednesday morning and you just happened to be the lucky recipent today".
Still shocked, I asked a little more and she proceeded to tell me that Jake comes into the restaurant every Wednesday. Whoever is in front of him in the line-up gets their order paid in full. "He is such a nice man," the girl said.
By the time our order was ready the STRANGER alert had silenced, and instead I was filled with a WOW, what a wonderful person he must be.
My girl and I took our tray and made our way to a seat.
But both of us were pre-occupied with this wonderful man who had just made our day.
He sat their all alone, his wrinkled shaky hands wrapped around his coffee cup, as he looked out the window.
My daughter and I looked at each other and without saying a word we just knew what the other was thinking. We made our way over to the table and asked if we could sit with him. His face lit up.. he said, "Of course, I would be delighted".
The next 45 minutes was filled with non-stop conversation.
Apparently Jake lost his wife a couple of years ago. His wife was very active in the community and always believed firmly in the concept of paying forward.
He said, "whenever something good happened in our lives, she would always say "Jake we gotta pay this forward".
He said, when she died I was very bitter at first, but after a few months I realized that I had over 50 years with an amazing woman. I have alot to be grateful for and alot of "paying it forward" to do. Her and I came here every Wednesday morning. It was her favorite time of the week.
I still come every Wednesday morning. And in her honor I buy breakfast for the person in front of me-- pay it forward, you know, and he laughed.
I swallowed the lump as I listened to him talk.
Before we knew it it was time to leave.
I thanked Jake for breakfast and promised to meet him there again sometime.
The next Wednesday morning...my daughter and I waited in the car until he arrived. When we saw him walk inside we raced in. We were now behind him. So, we did our own "pay it forward" and paid for his coffee. His face lit up!!!
We now meet Jake every Wednesday morning.
Little did we know just how much a free breakfast could actually be worth.
Comments
Notsonice: wow what a lovely compliment..thanks.
I think pay it forward is a wonderful concept. It would be great if more people did it for each other. It does not have to be money related either. Help a senior to the car with their groceries, or across a busy street. Donate used clothing to charity or a safe shelter. Anything another human being can do for another without expecting something back in return. Wouldn't the world be a much better place if each of us made someone else's day a little brighter through some simple gesture.
Thanks for your lovely comment Notsonice..xx
awe! That is such a nice sweet story. You made an old man happy, taught your daughter a lesson, and made a new friend in the process. It doesn't get any better than that.
~contented sigh~
I-Luv-Eeyore: Thanks....
You are right, it sure doesn't get much better than that. Jake has taught me many amazing lessons on life. He is a wise and wonderful man. Getting to know him has been a blessing!!!
toeknee: Wow thanks. What a nice thing to say!! Glad you enjoyed it!!! And Happy Birthday ;-)
jp: Making YOUR day makes MY day..;-) thanks
For anyone who doesn't know or hasn't see it... the movie Pay It Forward is absolutely wonderful (kevin spacey)
That is so neat to hear about Jake!
Have you heard about the film "Pay it Forward"? It's about a kid helping 3 people, then those three people help 9 people and so forth. Great film :)
Wonderful story, and I love the coincidence of it, timing of things is so fascinating....And I love that you chose to actually make a friend of this man, who obviously has a very kind heart, and was also probably quite lonely before you and your daughter...
:)
What a note to start my day off on. Beautiful people x 3!! If only everyone would take the time to show and receive such kindness, this ol' world would be a much better place.
Thanks for sharing.
I'm so glad that you and your daughter are experiencing this wonderful concept together. :)
TIG'g this and favoriting it as well. You've made my morning! XOXO
SweetMisery: you are right tehre are alot of lonely people out there and age does not matter.

Pollyorange: Awww...*passes tissue* you're adorable, but what the heck is a wotsit? hahaha
Ron: Thanks...yes I have seen that movie..totally awesome!!!
Carrie: *passes tissue too* Thanks soooooooo much carrie what a sweet thing to say.
katiebell: you're right!! If we never missed a Tuesday morning breakfast we probably never would have met him. And yes he was very lonely. Believe it or not, as many people as he bought breakfast for, nobody has ever be-friended him. He has gotten thank you's and once someone bought him flowers...but nobody ever took the time to get to know him. That always amazes me because they have no idea what they are missing.
Lauren: thanks for commenting. I dunno if I am paving with gold but I do know Jake is definitely a gem...lol. Thanks for commenting Lauren, always nice to see you here.
secretheart: thank-you very much!!
berk: Awwww what a nice thing to say. That deserves a huge (((((hug)))))
Thank-you!!!
And you are right about people taking the time to show and receive kindness. As I commented to Notsonice at the beginning here.

Smiling at a stranger, moving your cart of groceries and allowing the person behind you (holding one item) to go ahead. Or something as simple as a sweet comment on someone's blog. Little things like this can totally make a person's day. And in return they feel the need to be nice to someone else.
berk you are a total "day maker" ;-)
Kelli: Both my grandfathers are gone. But, one of them in particular was very kind-hearted like Jake.
Arly and I feel so blessed to have Jake in our lives. We look so forward to Wednesday mornings and we spend every moment with him talking and laughing and sharing and learning. His wisdom and the stories he tells are something that my daughter and I will not easily forget. thank-you so much for your comment.
crankypants: covers your bowl..:P
thanks for the comment!!
i too go to the same coffee shop every morning, and i see the same "older" man. regardless of the time of morning (sometimes I'm later than usual) I see him there. i haven't gotten the courage to actually talk to him, but i did ask the guy behind the counter if he truly goes in every morning. he said yeah, he's just a nice older man without family and friends. he comes in for a coffee and cookie every morning.
i think i'll say hi to him tomorrow morning.
beba: awww I sowwy!!!! lol
